How long does gold plating last?
Electroplated gold plating is more than just a visual enhancement. It protects and enhances your jewelry and other objects, creating a luxurious finish.
But how long does gold plating last?
Unfortunately, this is very difficult to answer in general terms. Durability depends heavily on the base material, the layer thickness, everyday use, the weight of the jewelry, and the individual requirements of the wearer.
We only use high-quality gold plating (galvanic hard gold plating) which is designed for a wide range of usage intensities.
Our gilding:
1. Base (3 µm)
This gold plating is suitable for jewelry that is subject to moderate wear, such as necklaces, earrings, or brooches. It offers a good balance between durability and price.
Approximate shelf life:
• if worn rarely: approx. 6-10 years
• with occasional wear: approx. 3-5 years
• with regular wear: approx. 1-3 years
• Suitable for: Jewelry with moderate use that does not come into daily contact with surfaces.
2. Premium (5 µm)
For jewelry that's subject to heavy wear, our premium gold plating is the perfect choice. This thicker layer is more resistant to mechanical abrasion and can withstand even regular wear.
Approximate shelf life:
• if rarely worn: approx. 8-15 years
• with occasional wear: approx. 6-8 years
• with regular wear: approx. 3-5 years
• Suitable for: Jewelry that is subject to heavy wear such as rings, watch cases and bracelets.
3. Decorative gold plating
(< 0.5 µm)
We offer this gilding exclusively for decorative objects such as works of art, statues, or display pieces. It is not used for jewelry, as it cannot withstand the rigors of everyday wear.
• Durability of decorative items: Several years
• Not suitable for jewelry.
How does the base material influence the durability of a gold plating?
The durability of a gold plating is largely determined by the base material. Here is an overview of the materials in three categories:
1. Optimally suitable materials
These materials offer the best conditions for long-lasting gold plating:
• Stainless steel: Excellent adhesion and high stability.
• White gold and silver: Ideal for permanent and even gold plating.
• Platinum and palladium: perfect adhesion and chemical stability.
2. Suitable, but prone to oxidation
These metals are excellent for long-lasting gold plating. However, due to chemical reactions or oxidation, they may require additional care and wear faster than gold-plated precious metals.
It's therefore especially important to follow our care instructions to ensure the longevity of your gold-plated treasures. Frequent contact with water and chemicals should be avoided if possible:
• Copper: Very suitable, but prone to verdigris formation as soon as the barrier layers are damaged in everyday life.
• Brass: Good adhesion, but also susceptible to oxidation as soon as the diffusion barrier is partially breached by abrasion or damage.
3. Challenging materials
These materials require special pretreatments or are difficult to permanently gild:
If you send us jewelry made of the following metals, it may be necessary in some cases to cancel your order or – depending on the condition and the additional work required – to carry out a subsequent calculation after consultation with you.
• Tin, zinc and cast zinc: Very sensitive to acid, can cause problems with gilding if the base coating is defective.
• Lead: Extremely soft structure, chemically unstable.
• Aluminum (not anodized): Requires intensive pretreatment, but limited durability.
A suitable base material is crucial to ensuring maximum durability of your gold plating. If you are unsure about the material of your jewelry, we would be happy to advise you and, if necessary, analyze your pieces for their composition!
Durability of gold plating: Differences depending on the piece of jewelry
Important to note: The durability of gold plating can vary depending on the wearer, daily habits, and care. In addition to the thickness of the gold plating (micrometers) and the wear and tear, the type of jewelry also plays a decisive role.
Different types of jewelry are exposed to different mechanical stresses, which affect the longevity of the gold plating. Heavy jewelry, in particular, generates more friction due to its weight, which can accelerate wear.
Heavy chains vs. light chains
• Heavy chains: Due to their greater weight, they rub more intensely against skin and clothing, especially the links. This leads to faster wear of the gold plating.
• Light chains: More delicate chains create less friction and put significantly less strain on the gold layer, so the gold plating lasts longer.
Rings
• Rings are among the pieces of jewelry that endure the most wear and tear in everyday life. Whether washing hands, working, or exercising – they frequently come into contact with surfaces and chemicals.
• Simpler rings with smooth surfaces are less susceptible to wear, while unusual designs with corners and edges or delicate details (e.g. points) are subject to wear more quickly due to mechanical stress.
Earrings and pendants
• These pieces of jewelry are subject to less wear and tear than rings or bracelets. Because they don't have permanent contact with surfaces, their gold plating is often the most durable.
Bracelets
• Bracelets are constantly in motion and regularly come into contact with surfaces (e.g., desk edges). The gold plating can wear off faster, especially on sharp edges, while rounded areas are better protected.
Necklaces
• Long and heavy chains: These are subject to greater stress due to constant sliding back and forth on clothing and their weight, which causes the gold plating to wear out faster.
• Short and light chains: They are better protected and often experience less wear.
Trailer
• Pendants worn on a chain are usually subject to less wear and tear, as they have little direct contact with surfaces. This means the gold plating generally lasts longer.
Watch cases and bracelets
• Durability depends heavily on the geometry of the piece of jewelry. Sharp edges and protruding areas are more susceptible to abrasion than rounded surfaces.
• Watches are particularly exposed to wear and tear due to direct skin contact and constant movement. Areas such as the bezels and clasps can wear out more quickly.
Are more than 5
µm possible?
Yes – we also offer hard gold plating with up to 10
However, these are not included as standard in our offering, are very costly, and cannot be covered by our flat-rate pricing, and for good reason.
Why are there no 10
µm available in the shop?
Gold plating with 10 µm may sound more robust in theory, but the reality is often different and less worthwhile than one might think:
After about 2 to 5 years (depending on use), even a thicker layer of gold will develop a dull, worn appearance due to mechanical stress, scratches, friction or unfortunate contact with hard surfaces.
These optical impairments do not occur because the gold layer has been removed, but rather because of many fine to deep scratches that no longer reflect the light evenly and make the gilding appear matte.
Everyday life will always leave its mark at some point. No matter how thick the gold plating is. Whether it's solid gold or very hard, polished stainless steel, there will come a time when the surface loses its shine!
And then we are there for you!
The problem with later processing:
Even if the gilding on the edges and surfaces is still intact, it will inevitably be removed down to the base material when polishing is necessary.
Mechanical polishing is unavoidable if the piece is to regain its flawless shine. However, even hard gold plating won't survive this for long; depending on the depth of the scratches, etc., it's inevitable that they'll reach the base material.
Afterwards, the piece of jewellery would have to be completely re-gilded anyway – regardless of whether it was originally 5 or 10

What influences shelf life?
The lifespan of a gold plating depends not only on the layer thickness, but also on the use and external conditions.
• Layer thickness: Thicker gold plating (e.g. from 5 µm) is more resistant to abrasion and chemical influences.
• Wearing habits: Jewelry that is worn regularly wears out faster than pieces that are used infrequently.
• Mechanical stress: Rings and bracelets that often come into contact with surfaces are subject to greater abrasion.
• Chemical influences: Perfume, chlorinated water and sweat can attack the gold layer and shorten its durability.
• Geometry of the object: Objects with complex or unfavorable geometries, such as protruding points, edges, or sharp-edged areas , are more susceptible to wear. The gilding is worn away more quickly by mechanical contact in these areas than on larger, flat surfaces.
Realistic expectations and our recommendation
The durability values listed above are based on normal and reasonable use . Harsh treatment, such as daily contact with chemicals or harsh mechanical stress, can significantly reduce durability.
• For jewelry worn occasionally: standard gold plating (3 µm) is ideal.
• For heavily used items such as rings or watches: Premium gold plating (5 µm) offers the best durability.
Why we reject decorative gold plating on jewelry
In our opinion, decorative gold plating with a layer thickness of less than 0.5 µm, as is known from inexpensive costume jewelry from many department stores and jewelry brands, is not suitable for high-quality and beloved jewelry, as it does not withstand mechanical stress for long and only provides pleasure for a short time.
While they cost significantly less than hard gold plating, they make little sense for special treasures. These are more of a sales coating to make a good impression in a display.
We use them exclusively for decorative objects that are not subject to daily use, such as exhibits or works of art.
Especially when a lot of space is involved and costs should be kept as low as possible.
